I'm not sure I believe in detoxing, I think the body's system handles toxins fairly well. But still maybe I am. Now to add to the sugar freeness I am stepping down the caffiene till I am free from it again. I have done this before but it crept back in. I want to find out though what my quality of sleep would be like with no sugar or caffiene to stimulate my system. Also whether that improved quality of sleep would translate into more energy in the day time.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-39401409432363501232014-05-01T14:33:00.001-07:002014-05-01T14:33:04.765-07:00Sugar and fiberI've always had an interest in nutrition both in the factual side and the diet porn side. I love reading diet books and watching shows like the Biggest Loser but have never followed a single diet. I never needed to. I don't especially think I do now but after a few months poorly last year and a lot of time sat studying this year I do have more junk in the trunk. Does this bother me? Nope not at all couldn't give a f**k. What does interest me is eating for more energy, greater health, balancing my immune system.

I quit gluten over a year ago and will never go back, I had health improvements almost instantly. I tried Paleo and the auto-immune protocol for a few months which did seem to help energy wise but was stupid expensive and time consuming cooking other things for the kids. Of course if you were to talk to a Paleo advocate they would sware by it as the cure for all ills, a vegan (one that eats real food not tofurkey and other weird processed things) the same, a raw foodist yup the same. They all have data to back up their claims, they all have supporters more loyal than a religious fanatic or 1d fan. Now logically I don't buy into low carb otherwise why aren't the countries where rice is the main calorie intake have the obesity problem rather than us. Nor do I think fat is the problem (who does these days) perhaps we should be looking at the common ground in these systems.

What they all cut out is firstly processed food, secondly high sugar foods. They all add in a large amount of veg.

Could it be that simple? Cut out sugar, add in fiber? After reading countless books and watching countless documentaries I'm beginning to think it is. That the common ground is why paleo, raw food etc seem to get the same results. So as well as sticking with gluten free I am going to cut sugar out. Now I'm not cutting out fruit as some no sugar advocates say. My only reason for that is the YouTube lecture on sugar by some dude called Lustig who explains the fiber content protects against many of the harmful effects of fructose. Also if fruit was the problem all vegans and raw foodies would be as fat as butter.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-31942091787727802792014-04-26T03:48:00.001-07:002014-04-26T03:48:59.639-07:00Green juice fast over
I stuck it out for four days which was enough to sort out my digestive tract. By the last day rather than the usual energy whoosh I get when I fast I felt dreadful. I realised why this morning, my period arrived a couple of days early so I had been at the very end of cycle which always causes my energy to plummet. Perhaps not the best timing! I plan on staying sugar free for another month to allow my insides to fully rebalance before the next sugar fest at my sons birthday. I'm kinda excited about being sugar free as it makes me really look forward to my sons birthday tea. That's what sugar should be, a treat. Birthdays, Easter etc should be occasions to really look forward to and splurge on not a massive over indulgence in a sea of indulgences.

Study wise I have exams coming up in a month, I am not feeling especially confident as I missed a whole load of study due to my youngest being poorly. I also have been struggling generally as my husband is working away all the time leaving me looking after the three kids, the house, the pets while working and studying. I shall give it my best and keep fingers crossed!

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-17968599898259097162014-04-23T07:15:00.001-07:002014-04-23T07:15:11.927-07:00Semi-fasting Day 2I woke up on Tuesday with no appetite and my abdomen physically hurting. Yup I had a good Easter. Nothing wild, just many large family dinners and Easter eggs a plenty. So it was at that point I decided to semi-fast. It goes like this :-

Simple green juice fast

During the day it's liquids only.

Breakfast:-

Organic hemp protein shake

hemp protein mixed with juiced green vegetables a little ginger can be nice in it.

At that point I also make up a second (large) bottle (just under a litre) of green juice cucumber, dark cabbage, celery etc with a spoon of chlorella for protein.
I then drink that through the morning.

Lunch:-

One mug of lemon juice.
Organic bone one cup made in the slow cooker over 48 hours (a little unusual in a fast but amazing for gut healing)

I make a second green juice for the afternoon.

Dinner
Grilled white fish
With green salad

Evening
More lemon juice before bed
Some apple cider vinegar for friendly bacteria

It's v low cal at around 400 calories but the small amount of protein keeps me going, as someone with an autoimmune disorder I found going on a water only fast in the pat made me quite ill, probably the boost it gave my immune system which as any only who knows about autoimmune will tell you the last thing I want to do is over stimulate my immune system. I found the same with juice only fasts the sugar ups and downs screwed me over big time. So I devised this for myself. I guess it's kinda a Paleo semi fast. I wouldn't like to state that as a fact as the Paleo peeps like the vegan peeps can get quite unnerving if you aren't doing it "right"

I am also making sure I stick to my ten thou steps a day and a little yoga even if it's not highly vigorous yoga, twists are great though!

Anyway the first day I didn't feel hungry at all, but I did feel rather lousy as I was recovering from the Easter fun. Today I had a couple of dizzy points this am but at the moment I have so much energy (it's 3pm here) that I feel positively hyperactive. I'm sure that's a temporary thing and I will crash soon!

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-61339557259112534772013-08-30T09:00:00.001-07:002013-08-30T09:00:26.425-07:00Oops
Sorry for the lack of blogging, the summer holidays have been as always a non stop chaos fest

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-39768743174824832162013-08-08T03:20:00.001-07:002013-08-08T03:20:35.843-07:00CopenhagenWhat a great workshop, it's too damn hilt though!

Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-74699419409387099602013-07-03T01:07:00.001-07:002013-07-03T01:07:37.810-07:00Oh joyApparently I have a nasty sinus infection and have been given Doxycycline to sort it. Not the end of the world, but I'm not comfortable. So I'm giving Jillian Michaels body revolution a go, today was day one and wasn't at all bad. The American cheer leader enthusiasm was a little grating but generally I like Jillian. The plan is to skip yoga this week while I get use to Jillian and then add in a few days practice the following week. I'm aware too much is simply too much for me, I don't have the luxury of pushing through something to see gains at the end, if I over do it I quite simply get sick for a fortnight by triggering a flare up. It's a pain but that's the way it is.

My little girl has been quite poorly the past few months too, she keeps throwing up. At first we thought it was a tummy bug, but it went on so long. The doctor thinks it could be ibs or colitis most likely triggered by something she is intolerant to, so she is on the gluten free, dairy free train with me but also avoiding nuts. I thank god I home cook or avoiding that list would be a nightmare! She did for all that ace here sports day and came 1st in two of her races and 2nd in her third.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-79820219615342649672013-06-28T04:12:00.001-07:002013-06-28T04:12:29.301-07:00Caffeine headache nearly goneThank fuck for that! Then today my younger son (11) went on a school trip and came home with a hole in his scalp, an actual hole and a scrape around his neck where he got "tangled" in chains...around his fricking neck. Now I can't even blame the school as he has nearly hung himself in blinds twice (we have none now) and a skipping rope once. Is it just my boys or do they all have a bloody death wish?

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-4692397320263601442013-06-21T06:30:00.001-07:002013-06-21T06:30:38.840-07:00Getting diagnosed or at least taken seriouslyI have been ill on and off for ten years. Each time I fell ill it was put down to a virus or an ear infection or something of that ilk. I cannot tell you how many courses of anti-biotics I took during that time. When I mentioned crippling tiredness to the doctor the response was "oh it's your hormones" or "you have 3 kids what do you expect" It was only when I kept a journal of the occasions I fell ill that I was able to notice a pattern and they did full blood tests. This of course showed by blood work wasn't quite right and I wasn't actually crazy. My top tips for getting a result are

1) keep a detailed journal, what are your symptoms? Does anything precede them be it sun, stress, a new food.

2) If there are visual symptoms such as rashes photograph them. Often by the time you have seen a doctor they are faded or gone.

3) observe the people around you, do you get sick but no one else in the house does? In which case is more likely to be your own body doing something whacky than a viral or bacterial infection.

4) look for patterns in the symptoms you have, if each time you are ill it's the same batch of symptoms again its unlikely to be a virus or other infection. They all tend to have their own MO.

5) Be persistent, no one knows you like you. If you feel consistently ill for no reason you have a right to know why. Don't let people make you feel like a malingerer or pain in the arse.
Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-56591401336723850842013-06-21T02:17:00.001-07:002013-06-21T02:17:26.592-07:00Day off, well everythingI'm pretty pooped today and have the blessing of a day off so later I'm going to practice the Ashtanga Rishi style (10 asanas held for 50 breaths) perhaps have a walk into town. Now I know he hasn't gotten less irritating so I must be less reactive, in fact I hardly even had pms the last few months. On the whole I just feel really level, content and happy even with all this going on.Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-20361338713870118202013-06-20T07:52:00.001-07:002013-06-20T07:53:47.999-07:00Teaching yoga with AutoimmuneI have thought about this quite a lot recently and have been just now as I plan to teach yoga for a few hours this evening. There is this idea amongst many students that yoga teachers have to be paragons of health, that somehow yoga makes us immune to any illness or disease, catch a cold and the reaction is "oh I thought you did yoga" this has made me quite worried and reluctant to be open about being ill, I don't for example talk about it a huge amount on facebook. I don't want to put people off coming to class, it is after all my livelihood.

Then this afternoon I realised it should make people more keen to come to class, I have had this for ten years. It has taken that long for the doctors to actually figure out what was going on. During that whole time I practiced and a lot of it I taught. There have been good days and bad days as far as practice goes and weeks were I was bordering on comatose and couldn't practice. However I have consistently continued and am utterly convinced without it I would have been far, far worse. That I hope will lead people to realise that yes they can do it, you don't have to be a twenty years old gym body to be a yogi. Anyone can practice to their own degree, I have days where I have to slow it down, other days I can romp through a very strong practice. It's about listening to your body and doing what is right rather than following a set of rules. I hope that as I become more open my students will realise that I my personal experience puts me in a unique position to understand their struggles rather than it putting them off.
I so needed back bends today and my theory is my body probably has a clue as to what it needs. I kept it simple with Shalbasana, Danurasana, Ustrasana followed by a bundle of Primary forward bends, I even had a go at Kapotasana, lets just say I may get there in 300 years! Having a burst of energy at this point I decided to arm balance and held Bakasana for 10 breaths and something resembling Tittibasana for 8 (probably wasnt pretty but my arse and feet were off the ground so hey!) at this point I dissolved on the mat and was suddenly so tired I just wanted to sob for a few minutes. Hey ho!

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-16160666211895749842013-06-20T05:01:00.001-07:002013-06-20T05:01:40.351-07:00Raw chocolate cheese cake in the freezerFor later after I have finished teaching evening classes...yum! Basically the same as the avocado cake but with orange juice rather than lime and a few decent tablespoons of cocoa :-)Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-54994045813393679092013-06-20T03:58:00.001-07:002013-06-20T03:58:40.450-07:00Extreme foodI have as you will know found that various foods either make my autoimmune better or worse. I'm not quite paleo as I do like a lentil now and then (wild I know). I am kinda low carb as that seems to work but love a weekend cake. I do eat meat and I do practice yoga, in fact I would like to think of myself as yogini, an imperfect one indeed but trying my best (I once explained to my kids whilst ranting at them that they should have seen me before yoga!)

Now there seems to a bit of a war going on between the Paleo and the vegan camps, of course as I stand in the middle I see a lot of this on yoga blogs, paleo blogs, raw food and vegan blogs. I as I am now gluten free find great recipes on all of those. But good gosh there is some ferocity in this battle. In fact a site has appeared outing ex-vegans! Wowsers.

Now I agree we should look after animals and be kind and if possible avoid eating meat. I tried vegetarianism a number of times and became very ill, no doubt because grains seem to trigger my autoimmune thingy.

Has it never occured to anyone that there is no catch all diet that suits everyone. In fact Paleo and Vegan are not actually in such opposing camps, they both avoid processed food, they both believe in organic, they both believe in local sourcing. In fact they have more in common than not.Flutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02971280813547990235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-137141040870598824.post-80720004823361837732013-06-20T03:26:00.000-07:002013-06-20T04:13:13.746-07:00Must share quickly :- Andy Bailey's video diary on living with MSNot only is this an incredible insight into living with MS but he is also really bloody funny, if you haven't had the pleasure I suggest you take a peek.
